Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (Gatefold Original Version)
David Bowie
Label: RCA
Genre: Rock
Duration: 34:22
Release: 1972
Producer: David Bowie, Ken Scott
Summary: After flirting with heavy guitar rock ("The Man Who Sold the World") and lighter pop ("Hunky Dory"), Bowie found middle ground on "Ziggy Stardust". The creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona would live on well after Bowie shed the alien skin, marking the first rock concept album by a sexually ambiguous, artistically bent musician who confounded critics at every turn. A blend of dramatic strings, swaggering saxophones, jagged guitars, and theatrical arrangements, the album's darker rock numbers like "It Ain't Easy," "Moonage Daydream," "Ziggy Stardust," and the irresistible "Suffragette City," still serve as solid excursions into the future (then and now) of rock. The buoyant "Hang on to Yourself" and the dreamy "Star" offer hints of optimism in Ziggy's bleak world. The dramatic "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" and the image-heavy "Star Man" ("he'd like to come and meet us but thinks he'd blow our minds!") no doubt provided plenty of stage-worthy moments when Ziggy toured in the '70s, but years later they still thrill. Bowie blew our minds!--Lorry Fleming

David Sanborn
Label: Warner Bros / Wea
Genre: Jazz
Release: 1995
Summary: The unmistakable and unflinching style of this sax virtuoso is carved in relief once more with this fantastic album. Sanborn possesses an overflowing talent and undeniable sense of the rhythm and musicality as a few. The arrangements are superb and his musical support is of first rate; Marcus Miller and Michael Colina conform a fabulous team.

An artistic feat from start to finish. If you are thinking to give a special present, this might be your choice. It is appropriate for any relaxing hour.

The Nightfly
Donald Fagen
Label: Warner Bros.
Genre: Rock
Duration: 38:45
Release: 1982
Producer: Gary Katz
Composer: Donald Fagen
Arranged By: Donald Fagen, Rob Mounsey
Summary: Donald Fagen's 1982 solo debut extends the sleek, smart pop craft of his work with Steely Dan into the realm of the concept album, taking the Dan's penchant for intricate plotting, evocative narrative voices, and allusive imagery to the logical next step. Fagen's connective thread is futurist nostalgia for the "New Frontier" as anticipated from the prosperous vantage point of late-'50s America. He romanticizes a brave new world of technology in the sultry diorama of "I.G.Y.," celebrating the coming glories of the Atomic Age. He then filters that view through his own suburban adolescence--a would-be seduction in a fallout shelter, the siren song of a graveyard-shift jazz DJ, a not-quite-hard-boiled "noir" adventure ("The Goodbye Look") that borrows its title from an early '60s Ross MacDonald mystery. Song for song, the set's a stunner and stands apart from Steely Dan thanks to a unique, poignant romanticism embodied in Fagen's yearning "Maxine" and a creamy update of Dion & the Belmonts' "Ruby Baby."--Sam Sutherland
